Radon is a radioactive gas that is colourless, odourless, tasteless, and is associated with lung cancer risk. Radon comes from the natural decay of Uranium in soil, rock, and water found all over the world. The gas can move up through the ground and enter a building by way of tiny cracks/holes in the foundation. It may also enter the building through well water. Once inside the building, it mixes with the air you breathe. Once Radon is in a building, it remains until it is ventilated out. Unoccupied areas of a building will have the highest levels.
Radon gas can be sampled for using passive samplers. Surveys are for 48 to 96 hours duration. Health Canada recommends an Action Limit of 200 Bq/m3. Levels above this in occupied areas of a building should be addressed.
GTA Environmental has detected Radon Gas in Ontario buildings. Call us today at 1-(877) 260-0987 to discuss your particular concern with Radon and learn how air monitoring will help you to assess the exposure risk.
